Abstract:
Montana Indian Reservation Boundaries were digitized from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 1:250,000 scale maps adjusted to be coincident with the Bureau of Land Management's Geographic Coordinate Database (GCDB) or the USGS 1:24,000 scale Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs). Where reservation boundaries are coincident with public land survey lines, they were copied from the BLM's GCDB. If boundaries were not coincident with GCDB lines, they were digitized on screen from the USGS DRGs. Reservation Boundaries will change as the GCDB is adjusted by the BLM and those data are imported into the Montana Cadastral Data Model.
Reservation Boundaries were adjusted to the newest GCDB on: 04/10/09.

Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with green text are defined in the ESRI Profile of the CSDGM. Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.

For the mapping of Montana Indian Reservations
The Base Map Service Center and the MSDI supports a federated database approach to all MSDI layers. Montana defines a federated approach as a method that supports the integration and utilization of data from multiple data providers, while retaining the primary maintenance responsibility with the provider. Most of Montana's framework data model efforts have adopted a federated approach that leverages multiple data providers and thus multiple data maintainers. It is plausible that errors do exist and we welcome all corrections. If you do have a boundary update/correction/question please contact the Governmental Units Data Coordinator. The Base Map Service Center is the definitive data source for Cadastral, Critical Infrastructure, Geodetic Control, Governmental Units, & Transportation for the Montana Spatial Data Infrastructure Frameworks. This is the source of all Montana Indian Reservation lines that follow Public Land Survey lines.
Montana Indian Reservation lines that do not follow Public Land Survey lines were screen-digitized from these images.
Montana Indian Reservation boundaries when coincident with the PLSS were copied from original GCDB data downloaded from the Montana State BLM Office. Based on recent observations, this GCDB data varies somewhat from what is available at the Denver GCDB LSIS site and BLM needs to coordinate to ensure one standard version of GCDB. The boundaries that are not coincident with PLSSS, rivers and other topographic features, were on screen digitized from the USGS rastergraphics. Discrepencies were researched when encountered, however this is not meant to represent a legal survey of Montana Indian Reservation boundaries.
